Program Overview
Who They Are
Foster Alumni Mentors (FAM) was founded by people who deeply understand the foster care experience — and who know that aging out of the system without a support network can be devastating. FAM exists to change that by connecting foster care alumni with caring, trained mentors who provide the consistent, long-term relationships that so many young people never had.
Based in Colorado, FAM pairs foster alumni ages 18 and up with volunteer mentors for a minimum one-year commitment. These relationships go beyond advice — they provide belonging, accountability, and the lived experience of someone who genuinely cares. FAM also hosts community events like the annual FAMpoint5K to bring the foster care community together.

How They Help
FAM pairs foster care alumni ages 18+ with trained volunteer mentors for a minimum one-year commitment. Each match is thoughtfully made based on shared interests, goals, and background. Mentors provide consistent presence, guidance, and genuine relationship — the kind of stable adult connection many foster alumni never had growing up.
All FAM mentors complete comprehensive training covering foster care trauma, attachment, boundaries, and how to show up effectively for a young adult with complex experiences. Ongoing support and resources are provided throughout the match to ensure every mentoring relationship has the foundation it needs to thrive.
The annual FAMpoint5K is FAM's signature fundraising and community-building event — bringing together foster alumni, mentors, families, and supporters for a run that celebrates resilience and connection. The event raises critical funds and awareness while strengthening the broader foster care community in Colorado.
Beyond mentoring, FAM hosts community gatherings, celebrations, and connection events that bring foster alumni and their mentors together in a joyful, supportive environment. These events reinforce that foster alumni are not alone — they have a community that shows up for them, year after year.
