Who They Are
Founded in 1869, UCAN is one of Illinois' oldest and most respected social service organizations. For over 155 years, they have been relentlessly committed to empowering children, youth, and families in Chicago and across Illinois — providing a comprehensive continuum of care that meets people wherever they are.
UCAN serves over 5,000 individuals annually through foster care, mental health services, transitional housing, workforce development, and community-based youth programs. Their model integrates trauma-informed care, community connection, and long-term support to break cycles of trauma and build lasting stability for Chicago's most vulnerable young people and families.

How They Help
UCAN's licensed foster care program recruits, trains, and supports foster families across the Chicago area. They provide trauma-informed training, placement support, and wraparound services for foster families and the children in their care — ensuring stability, healing, and permanency for youth involved in Illinois' child welfare system.
UCAN provides outpatient and community-based mental health services for children, youth, and families dealing with trauma, behavioral health challenges, and crisis situations. Their licensed clinicians deliver individual, family, and group therapy — all grounded in trauma-informed, culturally responsive practice that meets the unique needs of Chicago's communities.
For youth aging out of foster care and young adults experiencing homelessness, UCAN provides transitional housing, independent living skills training, and case management. Their housing programs bridge the gap between foster care and adult independence — ensuring young people have a stable foundation as they build their futures in Chicago.
UCAN's youth development programs equip young people with the skills, mentoring, and community connection they need to thrive. From workforce readiness and job placement to arts programming and mentoring, UCAN builds pathways to opportunity for Chicago's youth — particularly those who have experienced foster care, trauma, or homelessness.
