Program Overview
Who They Are
Teaching Family Homes of Upper Michigan was established in 1981 to serve troubled children and families in Michigan's remote Upper Peninsula. What began as a single residential group home caring for just six children has grown over 40+ years into the largest private child welfare organization in the U.P. — operating from a scenic 40-acre campus in Marquette and satellite offices across the region.
Their mission is to provide ethical, cost-effective care to children, families, and individuals in need by facilitating self-sufficiency through the enhancement of self-esteem, skill development, and interpersonal relationships. Affiliated with Father Flanagan's Girls & Boys Town, TFHUM delivers a full continuum of care — from foster care and residential treatment to juvenile justice services, in-home family support, and community-based programs.

How They Help
TFHUM recruits, trains, and licenses foster families across Michigan's Upper Peninsula — providing placement support, ongoing training, and wraparound services. Their foster care program works closely with MDHHS and the Michigan Foster Care Portal to streamline licensing and connect children with safe, nurturing families throughout the U.P.
From their 40-acre campus in Marquette, TFHUM provides residential group home care and treatment for youth who need a higher level of structured support. Residents receive individualized treatment, trauma-informed care, education support, life skills development, and therapeutic recreation — including outdoor adventure activities like rock climbing that build confidence and resilience.
TFHUM's in-home programs provide intensive services to prevent out-of-home placement or support families after children return from foster care. Operating across Western, Eastern, and Central U.P. counties, their family preservation teams work directly with families to build safe, healthy home environments and develop the skills for lasting stability.
TFHUM provides juvenile justice education, community supervision, and reentry services for youth involved in Michigan's court system. Their community-based programs extend across the entire Upper Peninsula — and their training and consultation services have reached school districts and child care organizations as far away as Hawaii, sharing 40+ years of expertise.
